Things Of Note

That Happened To Me Today

1. My eyeglasses flew off of my head in the insane gusts of wind felt around Boston, causing me to yell "Jesus!" and "Fuck!" Also, causing others to stop and laugh at poor me. Miraculously (I seriously did ponder the existence of God after this), my eyeglasses managed to float unharmed through traffic and in front of one very big mack truck, landing gently on the double yellow lines in the middle of the road. Of course, I ran after them like an insane person with arms like a frantic windmill trying to save them. Which I did. I'm wearing them now.

2. Finally for the love of god, finished the first Kubrick movie in my Casa de Notyomomma Retrospective- Killer's Kiss. Boy, is it choppy. The music is sparse, more than likely because he had no budget (I'm assuming). The actors are sub-par and the timing of the action is off. But, it's not a miserable movie. It's clearly amateur, but there are a few shots where you can tell he's looking through the lens with an artist's eye. He seems to like using the mirrors in this one. Maybe because he was force to use cramped quarters? But, there is a duality of pov running throughout the film: she looking over into his practically identical apartment, he doing the same; intercut of one of her typical nights with one of his typical nights. I can't wait to watch the next one and see how he progresses, which also makes me realize reading a biography on him at the same time would be most fantastic.

3. Purchased James Frey's A Million Little Pieces today. I'm reading a non-fiction now, but just finished a novel (Lolita, to be exact). Somehow, somewhere I heard good (raves, actually) things about it. So, after I finish New Media In Art and Interpreter of Maladies and the Kubrick biography, this will be next! I'm getting way ahead of myself, aren't I? It happens.

El Posto

I am so outta here manana. That's Spanish for tomorrow. Actually, since I can't do the tilde thing, that may be Spanish for ca-ca or something. There are lots of Mexicans where I'm going. Including my grandparents. My grandmother is lilly white with blonde (fake) hair. My granddad is brown. I am yellow. Or so I learned from my friend the other day. And the Mac artist. How can other people tell these things, yet I am completely oblivious? I was a little worried (ok, still am) about my grandmother. She used to be such a powerhouse. And so freaking opinionated. But, she's become more or less a hermit lately. Her anxiety attacks are getting the better of her these days. I guess she was always high strung to begin with. And a quintessential Mother. Capital M. She was always worried about what could go wrong, how she would need to help one her kids out, constantly concerned about every offspring's offspring's welfare. She once said to me (I think to discourage me from the idea altogether), "Once you're a mother, you're always a mother."

True that.

Poorly designed websites suck.

Take mine, for instance. I'm not going to pretend it's a design marvel. It's a basic and straightforward affair. One day I changed it pink and that's about all of the upkeep I have the time to commit. In an excellent world, I would have a crazy ass awesome website, but I have more important things in which to attend. Like not making all of those movies I've been planning.

BUT. BUT! BUT! There are companies that have horribly unfriendly, uninviting, defeated before you begin websites. One, for instance, is the Boston Globe. So fucking blah. No link beckons you to click on it on their site. You really have to be on a mission to get what you want. It doesn't encourage perusing at all. I'm trying to think of a newspaper website that is stellar, but I can't. The New York Times is most definitely better designed. And the LA Times.

It's so sad. I want to read my local paper, but every time I open the main page, I'm instantly fatigued and chagrined.

Word of the Day: Hoe-y (Not to be confused with hoagie)

I'm trying to flip flop my schedule. I took off work yesterday, which gave me plenty of time to rest up. I was glued to the tv. It was just one of those days where all I wanted to do was lie in front of the tv. Truly, that's all I wanted to do. I just feel the need to do that about every couple of weeks. I think the reason is watching tv is the only time my mind shuts down. I've tried meditating. I've tried reading mindless magazines. Nothing compares to watching tv in achieving almost complete mental arrest.

So, what did I watch? Such an interesting question. Well, let's see...the day began with some cnn. I've started watching again since Katrina. Followed up with a good dose of videos, switching between MTV, VH1, and MTV Hits. I used to be in love with Shakira's new video starring her hot self and also a very hot Alfonso person. But I guess I've seen that one too many times now. My new video love is Kanye West. His "Golddigger" video with Jamie Foxx, in fact. It's shot so well. There's not a whole bunch of frantic, senseless energy going on in the frames. Usually, it's just Kanye and one woman or just a tight shot of Kanye. I love the shot of the back of Kanye's head, where he's moving his head to the beat, singing, and snapping his fingers. Because the shot is so simple and taken from behind, it's a novel approach. From a photographic standpoint, the background is always crisp and clean. Again, not a lot of superflousness crowding everything. The women are also not as hoe-y as usual. They've got nice satin tight fitting corsets on, not god awful daisy dukes or halters or the like.

Then, I gravitated to the TLC. I guess that just proves I'm female. I watched A Makeover Story, A Baby's Story, and the one about getting engaged. Fluffy! All of it. Finally, my night ended with a triple shot of Kathy Griffin's new reality show. LOVED IT. Soo loved it. She's fantastically funny. Finally, I got sick of it all and got into bed, setting my alarm for 4 am. Yeah, I know- yeah, right. Well, I did get up at 5 am. I actually watched a bit more tv this morning. But, I have another reason for this morning's viewing. I read, for the love of me I can't remember where (Boston Globe?), that this person conducted all of these rigorous scientific studies on himself and came across the discovery that he was less depressed throughout the day if he watched one hour of large talking heads in the morning. It can't be any other time of the day. He theorizes this may hark back to the Stone Age, when we humans communicated mainly during the mornings, then all split up to forage and survive. Well, I have totally bought into it and my large talking heads of choice will be the cnn pundits.

Look, I posted the same pic 3 times!

That's what we call DRUNK BLOGGING. Be forewarned. It can happen to you. Particularly when you drink a couple of bottles of wine. We ladies got makeovers at Mac on Saturday. We were promised cocktails while they painted our faces, but they didn't provide. So we more than made up for the omission after we left. I ended up sporting a very discernable fake tan. My 'artist' got a bit wild with the bronzer. Ashbloem ended up sporting the hypnotizing eye shadow look. The colors were irridiscent and magically faded into one another. Terra ended up with the most classical hot look, I have to say.

I've been very behaved in regards to egregious drunkeness lately, so I'm trying to figure out where the night took the wrong turn. All sorts of THOSE THINGS THAT VERY DRUNK PEOPLE DO occurred. Evidently, we somehow picked up guys at Ashbloem's apartment, who happen to be much younger than we are. Also, on the way to to the bar, there was some police tape strapped to a couple of trees, which was my cue to pretend I was running the Boston Marathon. (Yes, it was that bad.)

Here's what I've decided: I was ok for the first 3-4 hours of the evening, but after that 4 hour mark, I should have immeditaly hightailed it home. I believe self-imposed curfews will have to become a standing order. And, in the future, I should not start drinking at 3 in the afternoon. And, if I do, it MUST NOT be with drinks, which after the first sip, make me say, "That reminds me of Mexico." Because, I am 30 years old and I have never once been sober in Mexico.

Hotness

Let's start with full screen dvds. What the fuck?? How, why FOR THE LOVE OF GOD are these made? I somehow purchased the "full screen" version of LOST IN TRANSLATION yesterday. I didn't realize dvds were split into crappy-Sunday-afternoon-local-tv-channel versions and theatrical versions. Whatever. Cause you know what? Whatever. I'm over it. I don't care. You can't pay me to care. Today is just one of those days where I DO NOT CARE and everything rolls off of my back. Even more so than usual. Crazy, but whatever.

I could go off on how just romantic the images appear in the movie. As if in every scene they are dining by candlelight. And I have quite a suspicion that Sofia and I are soulmates in the music department. She could make me a mixtape and I could bathe in it for days, I am more than sure. I also ended up purchasing WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER. I'm sure hoping it holds up on a second viewing. And a third and a fourth for that matter. We'll see. Hey! Virgin Megastore is selling a riot of dvds for $10! That's usually the amount I pay in late fees when I'm renting from the local, so, I guess as long as it hold up for just a second viewing is fine by me.

I'm going to Dallas in a couple of weeks. And then Austin. Isn't that fab? Aren't you jealous? I can't wait. I've requested to be taken to a lake. This is something Texan people do. They eat grilled things, drink ice cold beverages from cans, and hang out on small bodies of water. I. Can't. Wait. Then, I'm going to the Austin Music yada yada yada. No, dude! That's the best part! It is! Aaaaaaaaaah! Except it may be very, very, very, very hot. I fear this, actually. I dimly remember the suffocation of Texas summers. God, they're bad. And I will be outdoors for hours. Oh, what to do? There must be some form of relief possible.
